It doesn’t get cuter than my little man in his Totoro costume. I totally want to fly away with him and his umbrella.
It’t not that long ago that I didn’t have an idea about Totoro, Studio Ghibli, Kiki etc. We haven’t watched japense animes at home (apart of Heidi). However, during the last years I read on various blogs again and again about them. Bloggers like You and Mie, Max California, Sew Chibi and Paisley Roots kept mentioning these movies. They sewed costumes and made me so curious.
I therefore re-read all their posts and decided to go for Totoro (affiliate link) first. By now we have watched the movie various times and we all LOVE it (and by all I mean the kids, me and even my husband). I love how quiet and magical that story is, how the two girls get to know the magical creature Totoro who lives in a huge tree next to their house, how they experience so many wonderful moments with him. Flying with an umbrella, riding IN a bus cat with eight legs and so on. It’s a beautiful and fun movie that makes your heart melt.
I was very pleased to hear that my son wanted to be Totoro this carneval. I revisited the above mentioned blogs for some ideas and quickly decided to go with Karly’s idea: She used the Harem Romper by Brindille & Twig to sew a Totoro costume for her son. I liked her idea, but moved Totoro’s face to the hood for which I used the pattern pieces of the Louis hoodie pdf pattern.
I used this taupe organic jersey from the Stoffbüro (Albstoffe) and some fabric scraps for the costume. The sewing actually took longer than I had thought it would. All those applications, the ears, the tail, they just need some time. Well, it was totally worth it, because I’m simply in love with my little Totoro (and so is he with his costume).
